Why would you do a Niacin + Sauna Program?
Every day we are exposed to a multitude of xenobiotics that our system has to detoxify through our natural detoxification system. In a perfect world, our detoxification pathways have the full capacity to break down and bind to all of these toxins and eliminate them. As we know, it is not often a perfect world. Some people have genetic variations (eg MTHFR) that reduce their ability to detoxify. There are lifestyle factors (eg, alcohol intake) that reduce the needed components to detoxify. And, for many, the sheer amount of exposure overwhelms our natural mechanism for removing them. So what happens then? We store them in our tissues, like fat and bone.
Our bodies are subject to so many xenobiotics in today's world- from medications to pesticides, skincare products, household cleaning products… the list just goes on. Many of these substances are fat soluble. When our detoxification systems are not properly functioning, these chemicals are stored in our fat.
Sadly, fat is not just a cell filled with triglycerides. Fat is our largest endocrine organ. YES! Our fat actually releases chemical messengers that influence our hormones, immune system, and metabolism. We have fat not only in our thighs and hips, but also surrounding our organs (visceral fat), as well as in our brain. Yup.. your brain is nearly 60% fat. Now imagine these cells contain toxic harmful chemicals like persistent organic pollutants. Should we assume they are just going to function properly?
So, how do we get these chemicals out of our fatty tissue? Well, weight loss is one way— because we release fat. Have you ever started an exercise or weight loss journey and found that you felt TERRIBLE? One reason could be that you were releasing toxins from the fat and not eliminating them. When they’re released but not eliminated, it can cause us to feel pretty crappy. Another way to address these toxins and heavy metals is to use a targeted approach with detoxification support, such as the Sauna + Niacin Program
Where did this protocol come from?
This protocol has been utilized since the 1970’s when it was developed by L. Ron Hubbard (yes, THAT L. Ron Hubbard!) Since its origination, the protocol has been adapted by those in the medical community like Dr. David Root and used extensively in research alongside researcher and surgical oncologist Dr. George Yu from George Washington University to help various populations like Gulf War Veterans and First Responders from 9/11 to relieve their symptoms of toxicity and dramatically improve their quality of life. Several other physicians and researchers also joined the ranks in using and studying this protocol, There are slight variations in how different practitioners administer the program, but the foundation remains: niacin and then sweat.

But how would a vitamin (B3, aka niacin) and a sauna help remove these xenobiotics?
Niacin is a wondrous vitamin. It was found that when niacin is consumed in increasing doses, it initially blunts lipolysis, the breakdown of fat (therefore the release of xenobiotics.) Approximately 2.5-3 hours later, there is a surge in lipolysis and a surge in release of these substances. Ideally a person then gets about 30 min of exercise to induce a sweat to increase circulation and then gets into an infrared sauna. Now that the substances are mobilized by the niacin, its time to eliminate them. There are two primary ways that these are released: through sweat and through the GI tract. Interestingly, the only way that we can release the heavy metal cadmium is through sweat. So, if you’re not sweating, you’re not releasing cadmium…. ever. During the protocol, it is VERY important to eat an array of vegetables as well as fiber rich foods so that those toxins coming through the GI tract will bind to the fiber and be eliminated.
This brings us to the point of the importance of having a daily bowel movement (every day, not just when on the protocol.) When we aren’t having daily complete movements, toxins have the chance to be reabsorbed into circulation and redeposited. If you’re having issues with daily bowel movements, this is something we will address as it is CRITICAL!!

Deep down I believe anyone who lives on planet earth should do this program periodically, if they’re medically able, to prevent becoming over- burdened from these environmental toxicants.
